Remove Password from a Microsoft Word File (Editable Again)
If a Microsoft Word document is protected and Tools → Protect Document → Remove Password does not work, follow this method.
Steps:
- Make a copy of the Word file
- Rename the copied file extension from .docx to .zip
- Open the ZIP file
- Open the word folder
- Drag settings.xml to your Desktop
- Open it using Notepad
- Press Ctrl + F, search for
enforcement - Change the value from 1 to 0
- Save the file
- Drag it back into the word folder (overwrite when prompted)
- Rename the file back from .zip to .docx
Open the document again, the password protection will be removed, and editing, printing, and AutoSave will work normally.
