Remove Password from a Microsoft Word File (Editable Again)

If a Microsoft Word document is protected and Tools → Protect Document → Remove Password does not work, follow this method.

Steps:

  1. Make a copy of the Word file
  2. Rename the copied file extension from .docx to .zip
  3. Open the ZIP file
  4. Open the word folder
  5. Drag settings.xml to your Desktop
  6. Open it using Notepad
  7. Press Ctrl + F, search for enforcement
  8. Change the value from 1 to 0
  9. Save the file
  10. Drag it back into the word folder (overwrite when prompted)
  11. Rename the file back from .zip to .docx

Open the document again, the password protection will be removed, and editing, printing, and AutoSave will work normally.
